Psychedelic checklist

So you’ve decided to embark on a psychedelic journey…

The voyage you’re about to set sail on is one with many possibilities. It’s best to set your intentions on where you want to go, but have systems in place in case the winds change your course.

*See Ceremonies & Retreat Centers if you are preparing for an organized psychedelic experience

Here’s everything I recommend having planned before the departure:

  • Location: I’m sure by now, you’ve heard of set & setting. Your external environment plays just as big of a role in your experience as your internal mood state. Identify somewhere you will be both physically safe and comfortable. This might be in your home, a friend’s home, a camping site you have visited several times before and are familiar with.

  • Trip-sitter or friend on-call: It’s ideal to have someone you trust and feel relaxed there with you. They can provide emotional support and ensure your safety. If you prefer the deeper introspection of journeying solo, you can have a friend or family member in another room. Or, give someone a heads up beforehand to be alert that day if you need to give them a ring.

  • Offloaded responsibilities: The last thing you want is to be coming down from a mind-bending experience only to realize you had a dinner scheduled with a colleague. Or be just about to peak on the substance when your dog needs to go on a walk. Try to free up your day so that you can focus on the inward journey.

  • Music: Maybe you want to listen to one of your favorite artists and experience it in a completely new way. Maybe you want to try the vetted psychedelic playlists (ie. Johns Hopkins, East Forest, Wavepaths). Have a couple options ready in case you’re not feeling one in that moment.

  • Comfort items: You can never go wrong with fuzzy blankets, soft clothing, sensory items, and ambient lighting.

  • Nourishment: Keep some water nearby, and ideally some electrolytes too. It’s easy to forget to hydrate. In my opinion, nothing tastes better than fresh fruits when on psychedelics. Especially in the latter stages as your trip is winding down, fluids and nutrients will help diminish the likelihood of headaches or other forms of discomfort.
